i had a pot of chicken on the stove top not cooking just unthawing it and my cousin came in and said i would crack the top by having this pot on there. is that true?

It would be better, and thaw faster, to put the pot on a rack, but it will not harm the top as long as you let the top come back to room temperature before you put the heat on. There is a remote chance that if you were to turn on the burner under the cold pot and cold glass, you might crack it.
