Ceramic cook tops

I'm researching the best kind of cook stove to purchase. I've always thought I wanted a ceramic smooth top. However, now that I've read comments on this website I'm scared to death of them. Seems like more people are unhappy than happy with their cook tops. Any suggestions before I make the purchase?

Just be prepared to clean it after every use. And be prepared to buy special cleaners for it.

This is my absolute suggestion; before buying one, cook on one for a week- rent one, take a vacation in a condo with one, do a house swap, something- no one I know who has done this has gone on to buy one...

One of my daughters used my glass top stove as a ladder and it cracked right down the middle. It is a black top so, the crack is not all that noticable. Is it safe to continue cooking on it if the crack is not near any of the burners? I priced a replacement one for my GE and the price was 411.76. I have priced others out and find that the same oven that I have is about $500.00 and I do not think it would be worth replacing the top when I can get a new one for $100.00 more. What do you think?

After reading other posts and the problems people are having with cleaning, I found that the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works like magic. (No pun intended).

Hmm, amazing what troubles the offspring can create!

You are right about the replacement- the new warranty alone is worth the difference. However, if you put a new top in yourself, which a handy person can do, you can save a few hundred dollars on the repair. The biggest problem with the crack is the issue of cleaning the top. Some owners have used engine epoxy, which is heat resistant, to repair the crack, it is not elegant, but it seems to work for a while.

Kathy, I just put in a new ceramic cooktop. I have a KitchenAid. I have no problems. I use Cuisinart Stainless Steel cookware. they have flat encapsulated bottoms. they are perfect size for the burners I have. very important!! Cooktop is easy to clean and cookware is too. Do not let some of the posts scare you.

Hi,

I just got a new Kitchenaid range two weeks ago. It has a black ceramic cooktop and it's driving me crazy. You can see every speck of dust and fingerprints. I clean it with the special cleaner each time after I finish cookng. No one told me how hard you have to rub to get it perfectly shiny! Also while I'm cooking, I clean with a soft cloth.
Funny, just as Barb, I purchased a set of Cuisinart cookware since I didn't want to use my old set which has aluminum as a base. Pieces of aluminum can get embedded into the glass.
I already have some very tiny scratches and I do not slide the pots around. I am so careful.......it's ridiculous...I have no idea how the scratches got there. (I'm afraid to breathe near this stove!!)
I love everything else about this range but I am ready to sell it because of the ceramic cooktop hassles. What will this cooktop look like in a year from now? Apparantly, the ceramic is made by Schott. I'm wondering if there could be a defect. I much prefer the solid burners on my old stove.

Hi, I've been cleaning houses for about 7 years now and few of my clients have the glass cooktops. I've found for burnt on stuff the Mr. clean magic eraser works most of the time - I prefer the kind for harder stains. To shine it up I just use windex to get the smudges out. The cleaners that come with it don't work that great, and you have to rewipe it couple times to really get it off. So try the Mr. Clean eraser and little windex...
