I have heard that eating food out of dented cans is dangerous and your site confirms this ... however u say severly dented cans which is vague or subjective... could u post a picture of what u think is the point of no return... my roommate gets some dented cans from the food banks ... is it safe to assume they know about this and dont give out "severely " dented cans? |

Hi, If the dent is over any seam or rim or makes an actual bend in the can, it can break the seal and allow bacterial growth, so that is severely dented. If the can has corrosion, a rounded or swollen top or bottom or spews or shoots, even a little, when opened, NEVER use it- heating does NOT make it safe. A small, soft rounded dent in the side of the can is generally OK. In the days before comissaries were privatized, the base vet had the job of inspecting dented cans or other odd food stuffs to decide if they were saleable. I know of no other inspection type arrangements. I have definitely seen unsafe cans in grocery clearance shelves and from donated items, so do recheck the food bank offerings. Hope this helps. |
