Ellen,

Why do you dislike glass-ceramic cook-tops?

Good question. Ceramic tops are slow to heat up, slow to cool down, cannot sustain high heat (as for wok cooking), are not very successful for pressure cooking and require meticuloud care to keep nice looking. Plus, of one burnwer goes, most require replacing the top. They just don't suit my cooking style.

Wgeb you are cooking a small amount of something that has to be boiled then simmered, you almost have to heat two burners and move the pot, the hot burner stays hot so long. Rice krispies!

Ellen,
I totally agree with you on the ceramic cooktops. My KitchenAid top of the line is one year old and I still hate it. I don't have access to gas and am considering replacing it with an induction cooktop made in Canada by Diva. They do have merchants in the USA that carry this product line. They still are a ceramic top but work by magnetic induction so you must use metal pots and pans with these, such as All Clad. Sears also carries an induction cooktop but only in a 30". It takes my KitchenAid ceramic stove at least 25-30 minutes to boil a 7 qt. pot of water. Ridiculous!!!!

I purchased a smooth top glass top Whirlpool Stove/Oven 2 years ago. Recently I was boiling a chicken in a ceramic 5 qt kettle when I noticed a smell of something burning. The kettle was still full of water and boiling yet the chicken had stck to the bottom of the kettle. when I removed the kettle from the stove top, I noticed it was slightly stuck and when it came loose it apperaed to have left a small nick in the glass surface and a small piece of the ceramic pot was missing. It actually stuck to the surface of the glass top. Now Whirlpool say it is considered a 'accident' and not covered under our extended warrenty. The stove was not abused and nothing was dropped on it to cause any damage to the surface and we have read of no cautions or restrictions in the literature from the Whirlpool company indicating that a ceramic pot could not be used. In fact we have used this pot before on the stove with no problem. Have you ever heard of anything like this happening before? Your input would be most helpful since the store we purchased it from as well as Whirlpool are giving me the run around.

Would like to know why gray stains appeared on my 1 month old smooth top stove and how to get them removed?
Thanks

Judy, this is usually from the bottom of aluminum pots. There is a lot of cleaning info on the other ceramic cook top threads- go read.
