I am coordinating food for an after crew lunch for 70 high school rowers (who will be hungry!) and approx 70 adults. I was told to get hamburgers, dogs and chicken. Beyond that, I decide. Can you help w/a menu? Quantity? Most are quite health conscious. Thanks!

I would count this as at least 175 people and if they are typical high schoolers, counting as 200 would not give you too many leftovers.

It is funny that people settle on burgers and dogs as a party menu. This is actually a relatively expensive menu and not easy to prepare for this many people- both the grilling and the condiments add to the trouble and expense.

Meatloaf, roast chicken and a baked potato bar would be much easier and a bit less expensive. Or how about a taco bar with Spanish rice and beans? Or chicken spaghetti casserole with garlic bread and salad. Is the menu negotiable?

Anyway, with the mix you mention, you would basically allow 1 4 ounce beef patty PLUS 1 piece (not quarter) chicken PLUS 1 hot dog per person, this allows everyone to get their choice with not too much of anything left over. Plus buns to match of course, and condiments as outlined in the condiment table on the sandwich even page. I would use heavy sides; pasta salad (easier to prep and store than potato), baked beans and slaw. Dessert- dump cakes/cobblers with the fruit layer, and ice cream.

thanks Ellen. You are right about the dogs/burgers but this apparently is the tradition and as a mother of a freshman, I think I'd better stick w/that. But your suggestions are great, thanks so much!

Hmm, traditions. You might consider adding a big pot of beanless chili (for topping the dogs and burgers, right?) and Spanish rice and borracho or refried beans as your sides... then it wouldn't hurt to have some tortilla chips and tortillas...
