Lady Kenmore stove - flipping out - what do I do?

I turned on my stove today and it acted like it was heating up...problem is it started smoking a lot. I suspected that something had gotten spilled on the bottom of the oven and didn't think too much about it.

Then I looked at the stove and noticed that it had turned itself off.

I turned it back on and the same thing happened...lots of smoking and then eventually it turned itself off.

When I checked it after turning it on yet again I noticed that it was REALLY hot even though the temperature indicator never went above 100 degrees.

The heating element seems to come on and stay on.

Any ideas? Thermostat maybe?

And would it be worth my while to see if it can be fixed or should I just go get a new stove?

I don't know how old the stove is...it's over seven years old because it came with our house. It has a Ceran cooktop.

Marianne, this is not the right place to ask the question- it is not even clear whether this is the stove or the oven. When a heating appliance shuts itself off, you should not turn it back on again before troubleshooting. A ceramic top over 7 years old is out of all warranties and might as well be replaced.
