Hi About how large of a hog would need to plan to roast for 100 people? Thanks |

You must allow AT LEAST 1 pound whole raw hog per person, so you really need 2 hogs. It is much simpler, and usually safer, to do fresh hams and shoulders. There are very good websites for hog roasting. I have posted some links on previous hog-roasting threads. |

so will a 140lb hog dead, feed 130 people? thanks! |

140 pounds dressed weight, yes; but consider- how are you going to turn the thing over while roasting? Two half that size would cook better and safer. |

We are roasting 2 pigs for a wedding, we have the big hog roasters but I need to know what size pigs i will need to get to feed 300 people. The pigs we will be buying have already been gutted and skinned they will have hoofs and head only. Do you think 2 130 lb pigs will be enough? |

Not sure where the whole-hog-reception has gotten started. If this is a church wedding with dressy clothes, it is a difficult choice... You need basically 300 pounds dressed weight whole hogs to feed 300 people, this does not count heads. For just two hogs, that is 150 pounds each. See the safety note above about the problems with two hogs this size. You should consider one or two smaller hogs (60-80) and a whole lot of pork shoulders/ fresh hams, etc. Much easier to manage and serve.
You also need to remember that there are about 10% in most crowds who do not eat pork or meat, and consider the rest of the menu in that light. |
