Cook Talk

'feast or famine'

our Church has a Confirmation Class plus Bible Study for All Ages on Monday nights. Approximately 60-75 people Weekly. Dinner has been made part of the Deal.

Parents of kids in the C.C. are expected to 'team up' and cook at least twice, augmented by other volunteer groups.

First weekend after Halloween, there was a benefit Christmas bazaar. Ungodly amount of Food left from Concessions: boxes n' boxes of serving-size Chips, hot dogs, beef patties, buns...soda pop (which we normally don't give the kids)

Bazaar folks gave us these leftover groceries, and it is a blessing to our budgets...we used the Hot Dogs right away, as they were infinitely easier.

Fridge, Freezers, etc. are Shared Spaces. A Huge fridge, and 2 freezers, but there's always friction between those who want 'stuff' in freezer used up Pronto vs. those who squirrel things away like they fear a famine.

When there are Receptions for weddings, etc., those folks have a right to expect to use the space, too.

Various 'groups' are Pre-Scheduled to cook from now right until the the Monday before school's Winter (Christmas/New Year) break.
Naturally, we can't dictate their Menu.

Naturally, if our Confirmation Kids are not quickly Using Up all those boxes of Chips etc., it makes us look 'ungrateful'...it does not get any Fresher, and takes up Cabinet space. Lots of Space!

WA state tends toward Cold and Rainy winters. Few are hardy enough to barbeque outdoors, but the thought of cleaning the Grease Trap on the inside 'grill' on a Monday night is not Enticing to any of us.
We don't seem to have anything like the 'broiler pans' one would use at home, for the Oven...but we are blessed w/Abundance of 'baking sheets', and gi-huge-ous boxful of Parchment Sheets to fit 'em.

There are approx. 120 hamburger patties, if not more,
w/Buns that'll barely be fit for Garlic Toast if kept months on end.

We parents either have to wait 'til the Weather gets colder and wetter, and/or Encourage the other groups (our Friends) to utilize the Burgers, etc. NOW.

Perhaps there are 'painless' methods of Indoor Burger Cookery we are unaware of?

Alternatively, Recipes we could share that use frozen pre-formed Burger Patties to best advantage? To some degree, this sort of 'stewardship' of Bazaar Leftovers will be an Annual Event. (better than Bizarre leftovers
;-) We should be Taking Notes.

in 'googling', the only pre-formed patty recipe I found that looked Edible was called 'Hamburger Patty Stew'. It involves laying beef patties in a casserole; then adding layer of potatoes, carrots, and onions (sprinkle w/salt & pepper)...Repeat. Add a little water, sprinkle with paprika; cover.
so far so good........
then it goes to Microwave; we would pitch it into the Convection Oven(s)instead.

this is a Seriously Fabulous church kitchen. Dishwasher that makes me think of the movie 'Car Wash' ;-) The Convection Oven is sort of a 'double' oven, with two nice big racks up Topside, and a separate oven compartment w/two more racks below. Gadgets R only as effective as the people operating 'em.

Any creative ideas for us??

Ok, you have a dream kitchen, so think outside the patty!

Those are just inconveniently small packages of hamburger. Thaw and you can make: chili, meatloaf, meatballs, hamburger stew, loose meat sandwiches/sloppy joes/maidrites, hamburger stroganoff, or any other recipe involving hamburger, most of which can be done in the pots or oven and avoid the dreaded grill-cleaning job (I hate it, too). Several will use up the dying buns as well.

The buns will also make GREAT bread pudding, a fine dessert for this time of year, especially with plenty of raisins and apples. Or open for mini pizzas one night.

Remember you can smash the chips to smithereens in the bags and use for shake and bake type chicken, or to top that ecoonomical tuna or mac and cheese casserole. Corn chips can make taco salad or walking taco salad see my out of the trash bag taco salad for amounts.

Your local food pantry or food bank would be able to use some of the sodas and chips as well, and 10% giving is good work.
