I am in charge of planning my mothers retirement/65 Birthday party. It is open house style and my dad wants just appetizers but I kind of want it elegant at least looking I wanted at least 3 hot and 3 cold appetizers. Having a hard time on deciding what to have for appetizers I know we will have vegie tray and fruit tray. I am making the food myself which is not a problem was in food service but my brain is froze we are planning on 100 people coming in during the 4hr time frame |

Michelle--did you check out the Appetizers 'button' at the top of this page. It has great info. It seems like you'd want a bunch of make-aheads so you can enjoy your mom's party too. How about hummus or other bean dip with chips or veggies, spiral sandwiches with various fillings, artichoke cheese squares (hot or room temp), zucchini patties (kind of like potato pancakes) w/sour cream on the side, cheese balls with crackers or hot artichoke dip....... |

With 100 people, you want 8-12 different items, and I would do both savory and "sweet", for example, adding a fruit tray with pineapple, strawberries, grapes, etc and dip, a cheese platter as well as some cream cheese balls or logs, an assortment of mini pastries and small bars in addition to the cake- not evryone will be there at cake cutting time and people do love desserts. Also, check your timing- if this is over a mealtime, such as starting right after work, the folks who come straight from work will eat a meal's worth, about twice as much as the folks who drop in after dinner. The tea sandwich page (new) has a lot of info on making sandwiches ahead and keeping them moist and fresh, such as lining the trays with lettuce leaves to provide justthe right amount of moisture. |
