Hi Ellen, I'm having a birthday party for my son in August and we will have approximately 60-80 people. I'm thinking of ordering 2 six ft subs (serves 20-25 people) and then make sloppy joes for the rest but i'm unsure of how much to make of that and how many buns. Also how many salads should we make? I know you always go by "gallon" size but how do I measure a "gallon" of salad? Could I be safe by doubling salad recipes and then maybe have 4-5 choices? I'm also going to do the fruit platter that serves 25 people that was on your recipe site. That helps out a ton! Also how many variety of desserts do you think we should have? How many bags of chips? Thanks for all of your help in advance. |

Potato chips, 6 pounds per 100, corn, 8 oumds per 100. Sloppy joes for 40 people, recipe with 13-14 pounds hamburger as the base. 50 buns. You can measure pounds of salads in a gallon by weighing a pint in ounces and just change the ounces to pounds (multiplying times 16)- for example, if a pint of something weighs 14 ounces, then a gallon weighs 14 pounds. Handy, eh? Happy birthday, dear so-on, happy birthday to you. Green salad, is also by ounces and heads- cabbage and shreds for slaw, 20 pounds for slaw for 100 people. See all my salad recipes for 100- many on the site- and make a third for 30, make three or a half for 50, make 2, or just use the amounts of ingredients as a guide for your own favorite recipes. If you have a birthday cake, you might provide two other choices- small bars or cookies- but do alllow 1 of each type per person, up to 4. |

Thank you ellen for all of your help! But I still don't understand the whole pint/gallon weighing? How would a pint equal lbs? Isn't 16 oz one pound? |

Yes it is, and I messed up the formula. The number of ounces in a CUP is the same as the number of pounds in a gallon becauase there are 16 cups in 1 gallon. When you weigh a PINT, divide the ounces by 2 to get the number of pounds in a gallon. So if a pint of potato salad weighed 14 ounces, a gallon would weigh 7 pounds (it varies, due to recipe variations). Hope this helps. |

With most recipes, you need 11-12 pound to make sandwiches for 40-50. |

Deb, go to the potato bar page which is also the taco bar page and use the amounts for 100 times 2 1/4, For adults it would be times two, but teens eat more. For 200, you would also want beans from 16 pounds of dried beans and rice from 15-16 pounds of dry rice. There are several Spanish rice recipes on the site. |
