It is a dried unripe berry of the pimento family that looks like a peppercorn or a clove, with a sweet taste that the English thought resembles cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, which is how it got its English name. Important in Caribbean and Middle Eastern cuisine, and widely used in sausages.
