I by mistake put some stainless steel pans that were aluminum on the outside in the dishwasher. Can you tell me how to get the shine back?

This is a chemical reaction between the aluminum and the dishwashing detergent, and short of scouring it completely off with emery paper, I don't know of any way to reverse it.
