My mom chiped out a piece of her glass stovetop where a burner is. Can she still use this burner or is it permanently out of commission?

If she uses it, she runs the risk of cracking the whole top, which means you have to replace the glass. This is the only treatment for either chips or crcka. So she can replace now or later. Some folks have done it themselves. If it is still under warranty, she might get a replacement top under warranty.
